Species: Human

Occupation: None (Patient at Asclepius Hospital)
Point of canon to be drawn in: Volume 10 or so

Appearance: Pale and thin to the point of ethereality, with almost white skin and stick-thin limbs. His facial features are narrow and elegant, if a touch drawn, with large eyes that are a striking shade of gold. His hair is a pale yellow and flows down to the small of his back, and his bangs partially cover his eyes. He’s clearly unhealthy, but it’s almost an elegant illness, a beautiful decay.

Personality: Kakyou is fond of long silences and quiet speech, and his presence in a room or situation is nearly nonexistent much of the time. He tends toward despair and hopelessness when on his own, and he usually thinks that there is no hope for him to ever stand on his own. However, he’s not quite as introverted and morose as he seems at first examination, and with proper motivation from outside he opens up and reveals his hopes – to someday see the ocean, to someday bask in the sunlight, to live a life that is independent and wonderful. The essential problem, though, is that anyone who gains his trust this way is someone Kakyou quickly comes to depend on, and he can be emotionally needy and dependent on others easily.

Abilities: Kakyou’s natural dreams are always lucid and under his full control, and he always appears in the same “starting location” – a black room lined with paper screens with a floor that, while it appears to be solid and dry, ripples to the touch. He can, from here, enter or watch the dreams of others, perceive things in the real world, and dream limited pieces of the future. He can also draw other into this “dreamscape” with effort.

History: Kakyou was born to a fairly high-class family, and once his powers were discovered, he was put to use as a tool for political manipulation. In this way, he gained himself and his parents a comfortable life - however, to ensure that he remained undamaged, he was kept isolated in the house.

Over time, he became increasingly desperate for human contact, and eventually he pulled a girl into his dreams through a combination of unconcious effort and emotional desperation. That girl was Hokuto Sumeragi, and she quickly became the light of Kakyou's life - showing him the outside world through dreams and promising to someday take him in reality. And with each passing day, Kakyou trusted her more and more, and soon Hokuto was his one source of solace and comfort.

Which made it all the more devastating when she died at the hands of Sakurazuka Seishirou.

Kakyou saw the death a short while in advance, and tried to escape his house to prevent it. However, a guard attempting to stop him wounded him badly, and the physical and mental trauma together put Kakyou in a deep coma. His family put him in a hotel to avoid a political incident, and he remained there for the next nine years, only staying sane thanks to his memories.

Finally, 1999 came, and with it the company of a girl named Kotori. Kotori was the first one to talk to him in nine years, and despite the destiny he foresaw for her, Kakyou couldn't help bonding with her like he had with Hokuto. He did what he could for her, but in the end she died as well, leaving behind only one message - that the future was not yet set in stone.

Despite this message, Kakyou lost hope more and more with every day that passed. Fuuma took him in and promised to grant his wish, but Kakyou found that he was no longer willing to rely on anyone else for comfort, especially not someone like the Kamui.

He settled in to watch the end of the world, alone once again.

False memories: Kakyou was born to a small family in Elysium, but from an early age he had difficulty. Due to genetic defects, he was sickly and fragile with muscles that were never fully developed, and at around age three he was consigned to hospitalization to “keep him safe”, as his parents put it – his immune system was weak enough that living outside could be fatal for him quickly.

As his illness worsened despite all the attempts to keep it under control, his dreams became increasingly lucid and strange. He had dreams about people he had never met and places he had never been night after night. Finally, though, as the illness stabilized at a high but manageable level, the dreams stabilized as well and Kakyou found himself with a bizarre form of control over them.

He started to try to shape his dreams into something livable, and he began to dream of a girl who promised to take him outside and shaped his dreams into beautiful landscapes and sandy beaches. Even though he knew she was a creation of his mind, he started to fall in love, and the dream-girl seemed to return the feeling. One night, though, he dreamed of her death under a cherry tree, and after that he was unable to see her again.

Recently he seems to have finally recovered from the worst of his illness and his immune system seems to have been strengthened compared to its pathetic state in his youth, but years of bedrest have weakened his muscles dramatically. He is currently undergoing heavy physical therapy, in the hopes that soon enough he can walk out of the hospital on his own.
